Description
– SWARM STRIKE –
Named after a venomous African insect and the sleeping sickness it inflicts on cattle, the deHavilland Mosquito FBV1/MkXV111 ‘Tsetse’ was armed with a powerful 57mm Molins 6-pounder quick-firing gun.
This ‘big-gun’ Mosquito operated with 248 Sqn, based at Portreath as part of the Banff Strike Wing on a coastal shipping strike off Norway 1944. With Hitler’s occupation of Norway, his land forces became increasingly reliant on resupply by ships at sea.
Mosquito Tsetse NT225/O of 248 Sqn was one of two Tsetses allocated to this unit on 5th June 1944 and flown by Flying Officer Bill Cosman RCAF.
