– NIGHTFIGHTER’S MOON –
Into the moonlit sky of 5th March 1944 a flight of four deHavilland Mosquito FBV1 nightfighters of 605 County of Warwick Squadron RAF Bradwell Bay leave the quiet coast of England behind on a night Intruder sortie bound for Germany.
The main aircraft is Mosquito FBV1 NS838/UP-J “WAGS WAR WAGON” of Flt. Lt. Alan Wagner DFC and his Navigator Fg Officer ‘Pip’ Orringe DFC. This night Flt. Lt. ‘Wag’ Wagner and Fg Off. Pip Orringe were to claim three enemy aircraft destroyed including a FW190 over Gardelegen airfield which raised his score to Ace status, before engaging and shooting down two Me410s and damaging a third Me410 of which he reported: “I chased another one and hit him with our last ammunition, but our windscreen was covered with oil from one of the three we had destroyed and so we could not assess the damage”
