The People’s Mosquito is campaigning for funds to return de Havilland Mosquito RL249 to the sky, and we are asking you, our friends and supporters, for your direct help in the form of financial donations.
The total project budget stands at £5.68 million.
This may seem a daunting sum, but it is a realistic one and is achievable with your help. You can see how the figure is broken down in the budget and also view our build schedule here. As we have such a significant amount to raise, to make the fundraising process more straightforward and transparent we have decided to split the sum into tranches, each targeting specific areas of the aircraft build.
Our first target
Our first target is £50,000 which will fund the fabrication of a complete set of Mosquito wing ribs – these form the skeleton of the wing (see illustration below and for more detail see our post “The People’s Mosquito is cutting wood!“). The wing ribs are scheduled to be cut from Canadian Spruce and various plies by our partners Aerowood Ltd. in Auckland, New Zealand, over the coming weeks.
You can find out how the fund is growing by revisiting this page at any time. At the top of the page you will see what we are calling our “fundometer” (the thing that looks something like an altimeter – Ed.) that we are going to be using to illustrate the growth of the fund for each target throughout the build, to show where we are with that particular tranche of fundraising. In the first instance it will show the total raised for the current target of £50,000 to pay for RL249’s wing ribs, as mentioned above.
Grand Launch Draw
To celebrate our fundraising campaign launch we are holding a Grand Launch Draw (well, we had to give it an whizzy-sounding name didn’t we?). The draw relates to the first tranche of fundraising which is the Wing Ribs Fund of £50,000. (Read our post “The People’s Mosquito is cutting wood!” for details on the wing ribs.)
We have 50 splendid wooden key-rings that have been cut from the same wood as RL249‘s wing ribs. These have been cut and stamped with our logo by Aerowood Ltd exclusively for our fundraising effort, and will not be offered for sale at any time. So this is a chance to own something exclusive to The People’s Mosquito.
*The rules of the draw are simple: for every £10 you donate you will be automatically entered into our Free Grand Launch Draw. (Figures will be rounded down – so £100 will earn you ten entries to the draw, £25 will earn you two entries, and so on.) The draw will take place once we have reached our target. Once a name has been drawn, that name will be removed before the next draw is made. If you wish to enter the draw without donating, please submit your name and email address to firstname.lastname@example.org

To help us reach our target, you may want to feature the TPM “Donate” button on your own website – or ask your friends to feature it on theirs. It costs you nothing and will help raise awareness of the project as well as funds. The HTML code to enable this is available here.
We have had a number supporters ask us if they can set up a Direct Debit to donate on a regular basis. We would be very happy for you to do this and will be making this option available in due course.
Donations in kind
We are extremely happy to consider donations in kind. We have already received very generous offers in kind of donations from two British companies, in the form of specialist power tools and metal aviation-grade tubing which will be used in the construction of RL249. We have also received a donation of an original print of a Mosquito from an artist in New Zealand and two collections of Mosquito prints featuring the Aarhus raid and Operation Carthage (the Shellhus raid) from a supporter in Denmark. We have also been offered a percentage of sales from a soon-to-be-published book about Operation Carthage. If you have anything Mosquito- or aviation-related you would like to donate that you think would help us to raise funds, please get in touch via the Contact Us page. We would be more than happy to hear from you.
